Backtrax Sports Utility Roof Tents is a venture ten years in the making for founder James Cockburn.
An avid modern day outdoor adventurer, James Cockburn hails from a farm in rural Zimbabwe. He went on to become a qualified and successful management accountant in London working with some of the worlds leading blue-chip companies including Ford, Coca Cola, McCann Erickson and Silicon Media.
In 2004, James and his wife gave up “city life” and purchased an expedition-prepared Landrover Defender with a fiberglass rooftop tent. They spent the next two and a half years driving from the top of South America down through the Amazon and Patagonia to Tierra del Fuego and all over the US and Canada to the top of Alaska. They lived and breathed roof tents for two and a half years! This can be re-visited at www.lodzi.com
James has also had expedition articles published in Landrover Monthly and travel stories in Falconry International.
Since 2007, James has owned and operated South East Queensland Campers and Gear a renowned retail showroom for some of Australia’s leading high end off road caravan, camper, slide-on and roof tent brands. He also started West Coast Campers & Gear in Perth as the first dedicated high-end offroad accommodation retail store in WA.
James is also involved in a Marketing Company specialising in cutting edge 3D, Virtual Reality and specialist App development marketing concepts and products…. there is no rest for the wicked!
Launching Backtrax is the culmination of years of proven business, travel and expedition experience—a true labour of love. Backtrax Sports Utility RoofTents are designed and made in Australia for Australian conditions and are the first, hard shell roof tents to open remotely and include interior lighting, speakers and tablet arm.
James is not shy to think “outside” the box and experiment with new technologies or methodologies! “The Backtrax Sports Utility Rooftent will be like no other tent you have ever owned before!”
Gary Curtis, Behind the Scenes of Backtrax
First comes the dream, then comes the hard work. Enter Gary Curtis. This is not the first time Gary and James have worked together. Gary owned and managed a successful patio business on the Sunshine Coast before taking semi-early retirement, purchasing a Kimberley Karavan from James at SEQ Campers & Gear and embarking on the “Big Lap” around Australia.
Gary was instrumental in helping James establish West Coast Campers & Gear in WA and starting a dedicated, high-end, off-road accommodation retail location on the back of the successful business model from SEQ Campers & Gear.
Gary moved back to Queensland after their agreed stint over on the west coast ended and has joined forces with James again to launch Backtrax Sports Utility Rooftents.
Gary has tenaciously worked with new technology, challenged our local engineering firms with last minute requests and endured many fibreglass setbacks. But thanks to his persistence and undying positivity, we have been able to turn Backtrax the dream into Backtrax the reality. The way Gary sees it is simple, “we couldn’t be prouder of the finished product!”
Gary is looking forward to growing the Backtrax range into a globally recognised brand!
